Why do I need to download the Java 1.3 plugin?

The Java 1.3 JRE is the earliest version of Java that supports MIDI. No MIDI, no sound. Most browsers don't have Java 1.3 installed automatically, so you must download it yourself.
What if I don't want to install the Java 1.3 plugin on my machine?

Use the non-MIDI version of Isthmus. It's not as cool as the MIDI version, but still good enough to cheat on your Music 101 homework.
Okay, I installed the 1.3 plugin and I still don't get any sound. What gives?
