Housing

Never invest in anything that eats or needs repainting.
-- Billy Rose

Yes, recently I've become a housing geek. If you're on the verge of become a housing geek too, here is some information you may find helpful:

Books

  • A Field Guide to American Houses
A comprehensive guide to the evolution of American houses from pre-Colonial days to the present. This book includes detailed descriptions of what the parts of a house are and how they are put together.

  • 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask
Do you know the difference is between a listing and a selling agent? Do you know what escrow is? Neither did I. This book is for you.

  • How Your House Works
A good guide to all of the things that go into a house and how they work. A little slow at times, but quite informative.

  • The Complete Guide to Home Wiring
A well-illustrated guide to how your house's electrical system works and what to do when something goes wrong.

Seattle Contractors

Here are some contractors we've had good luck with and not-so-good luck with:

Electrician

Steve or Jeff
The Electric Company (206-633-3896 (?))
We were happy with both of these electricians.

Locksmith

Howard Nevitt
Ravenna Locksmith (206-478-3794)
He's nice, he's friendly, and he showed up on time. I would definitely hire him again.

Plumber

We're still looking for a good plumber. If you know of any, please email me!
